“Gun violence is not isolated to a few Chicago neighborhoods, but becoming increasingly pervasive in all our communities. We cannot depend on politicians or government agencies alone to end gun violence. All communities, city and suburban, must work together to change the conditions fueling this epidemic and support organizations that are working in our communities to end this cycle of violence by working to build peace with those most likely to be victims and/or perpetrators of gun violence,” says Loren Middleton, event organizer.
The Institute for Nonviolence Chicagois a catalyst for peace. Nonviolence Chicago’s services are hyper-locally focused in three of Chicago’s most violent neighborhoods to decrease shootings and homicides: Austin, West Garfield Park and Back of the Yards. Staff engage with those at highest risk of being involved in gun violence through outreach and mediation; victim services; case management; community organizing; and Nonviolence training to build the Beloved Community. www.nonviolencechicago.org
Neighbors Unitedis based out of Oak Park but will work in the surrounding area as well. They work to end gun violence by hiring staff who are participants of Nonviolence Chicago looking to increase their skills and start a life of Nonviolence. Their specialties include: lawn care, gutter cleaning, snow removal, moving, spring/fall cleanup, fence removal and waste hauling. https://neighborsunitedllc.com/about/.
