September 24th is the congressionally designated day of remembrance of murder victims. Firearms murder approximately 12,000 Americans each year, and another 20,000 die from gun suicides and accidental shootings. Perhaps, there is no greater urgency to address the deleterious impact of gun deaths than in the City of Chicago and the surrounding Chicagoland communities. Given the epidemic of handgun violence throughout our nation, a coalition of local organizations across the nation will join for The Concert Across America to End Gun Violence. We will use this day to compel our elected officials to do more to curb gun violence and to keep guns out of the hands of violent individuals and the mentally ill. To incite awareness and action, local Chicagoland organizations will be sharing in this day of musical activism to compel awareness, action, and to raise funding for non-profit agencies that provide support in communities ailing from ramped gun violence.
